What is Whole Home Reverse Osmosis?

Whole home reverse osmosis is a process that creates ultra-pure water that is used throughout an entire home. There is no whole home filtration system that delivers a higher level of water purity. The users of a whole home reversr osmosis system can expect bottled-quality water to every water using outlet and appliance in their home.

A whole home reverse osmosis system is a collection of filters and pumps, but at the heart of the system is the reverse osmosis membrane. The membrane has extremely small pores that only allow pure water to pass through. Water is pressurized against the membrane to push the pure water through while contaminants are swept away to drain.

Becuase the process of creating this ultra pure water is relatively slow, whole home reverse osmosis systems utilize a storage tank to supply all household needs.  Household water use draws on the storage tank, and the whole home reverse osmosis system reacts by slowly topping up the tank. A re-pressurization pump distributes the stored water to the home on demand.

Depending on the incoming contaminant level and water temperature, many whole home reverse osmosis systems will send 4 or 5 gallons of water to drain for every gallon of purified water they create. However, systems have emerged in the marketplace that are much less wasteful including this system by Crio Water that wastes almost nothing.
