This media, called Filtersorb, was originally developed in Germany to reduce the formation of hard water scale in industrial equipment. To properly understand how a salt free system works, one must first understand how conventional softeners operate. In a conventional water softener, tiny beads of resin attract and trap calcium and magnesium ions that are dissolved in the water. In order to capture the calcium and magnesium, the resin bead must release an ion of equal charge. In the case of a conventional water softener, the "trade" is calcium or magnesium for sodium, which is also known as "salt".
