More about Salt Free Water Softeners:

At the heart of this eco-friendly salt free system is a tried and tested catalytic media. Unlike conventional water softeners the aQuatell Salt Free Water Softener does not remove the hardness causing compounds of calcium and magnesium. Instead, the catalytic media converts these substances from their dissolved form into tiny nano-particles. Since the calcium and magnesium are no longer dissolved they are unable to coat pipes, washing machines, dishwashers and hot water tanks. In their non-dissolved form they will not interfere with soap allowing homeowners to use 50% less soaps and detergents.

Perhaps the most surprising feature of this system is its ability to reverse the effects of hardness and scale damage. Because the aQuatell Salt Free Water Softener effectively removes hardness compounds from solution, the resulting water is able to dissolve pre-existing hard water deposits. Depending on the extent of existing hard water scale, the aQuatell Salt Free Water Softener will clean existing plumbing and appliances in 1 - 3 months.

How a Salt Free Water Softener Works:

At the heart of a salt free water softener is a revolutionary water treatment media. This media, called Filtersorb, was originally developed in Germany to reduce the formation of hard water scale in industrial equipment. It was realized that this media could be applied to the residential water softener marketplace and the salt free softener was born.

To properly understand how a salt free system works, one must first understand how conventional softeners operate. In a conventional water softener, tiny beads of resin attract and trap calcium and magnesium ions that are dissolved in the water. In order to capture the calcium and magnesium, the resin bead must release an ion of equal charge. In the case of a conventional water softener, the "trade" is calcium or magnesium for sodium, which is also known as "salt". Once all the resin beads in the water softener are saturated with calcium and magnesium, the softener must be regenerated. This is accomplished by bathing the resin in concentrated salt brine solution. This caused the calcium and magnesium to be released and the replaced by sodium. This brine, calcium, and magnesium solution is then sent to drain.

In a salt free water system, there is no such exchange. In fact, the water causing minerals of calcium and magnesium are not removed from the water at all. Instead, the media inside the salt free system acts as a helper, or catalyst, in the transformation of the dissolved calcium and magnesium ions into tiny undissolved crystals. Each of these crystals is microscopic - one billionth of a meter. You could fit 10,000 of them in the width of a single strand of hair.
